McWilliam's Winemaker, Martin Cooper has been awarded the prestigious Qantas Medal. The award coincides with Martin's appointment as the company's Group Senior Winemaker.
The highly prized Qantas Medal, run in conjunction with the Qantas Winemaker of the Year Award, was established three years ago to encourage the pursuit of excellence among young winemakers. It is judged by some of the industry's finest, including: Judy Sarris, Peter Forrestal (Chairman), Peter Bourne, Nick Bulleid MW, Huon Hooke, Sophie Otton and Kayte Nunn. At just 29 years of age and since joining McWilliam's Wines in 1999, Martin Cooper has quickly established himself as both a notable winemaker and industry professional. The award, an indictment of Martin's talent, passion and enthusiasm for wine, was presented at a dinner, held in Sydney, last night. Martin said he felt privileged to receive the award: "Australia is fortunate enough to have so many talented young winemakers, to be recognised among them is amazing," Martin said. "The award is also a reflection of the people I work with and McWilliam's Wines. I have gained immense experience and knowledge since joining the company." Earlier this month, Martin was appointed McWilliam's Group Senior Winemaker, reporting directly to McWilliam's Chief Winemaker, Jim Brayne. His new role sees him responsible for furthering the stylistic and technical development of the company's winemaking, as well as managing fruit sourcing, planning and allocation of resources, and budgeting. "My new role reflects the changes the company has made over the last decade, with a contemporary shift towards regionality and style, increasing quality and a larger emphasis on viticulture. I'm honoured Jim Brayne and the team have the confidence in me to play a larger role in continuing and furthering these developments," Martin said.Martin completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science in 1999 at the University of Adelaide, majoring in Oenology, and a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Sydney in 1994. One of Martin's biggest achievements was becoming an Inaugural Len Evans Scholar. The course - run by Australian wine luminary, Len Evans AO OBE - involved tasting the greatest wines from the greatest vintages from around the world. Martin is well respected for his winemaking skills and commitment to the Australian wine industry, and in particular, the Riverina region in New South Wales. He is the President of the Riverina Young Winemakers Club and a delegate to the Winemakers of the Riverina. Martin has also been a top ten finalist in the 2001Young Winemaker of the Year Awards; completed vintages in Bordeaux (1999) and Alsace (2000) in France; and been an Associate Judge at the 2002 Royal Sydney and Adelaide wine shows. He lives in the Riverina with his wife Helen and his interests include cricket, golf, horse-racing and rugby union. With a private pilot's licence, Martin likes to take the scenic route when travelling between vineyards. |
