It is with great pleasure that we would like to introduce Richard Langford as Elderton’s new Winemaker.

2003 has been a memorable year for many reasons; the biggest being the first year of 100% production capabilities at Elderton. The new winery, which encapsulates state of the art equipment together with 80-year-old open fermenters in a 90-year-old tin shed, has provided Elderton with the facilities to take our wines up to the next level. Added to this, there is a bottling line on site now (not owned by Elderton), which means many of the wines will be Estate grown, Estate Produced and Estate bottled.

Richard joins us as of the beginning of August, and comes with high praise from many present and past Barossa winemakers. In his past working life he has worked in the Barossa, Rutherglen, Hunter Valley, Mudgee, Tamworth, Riverland, Riverina, Wagga, and in the South of France (he was also headed off to Chablis for the upcoming harvest, before we nabbed him from the French). He has experience in warm and cool climate viticulture, and from tiny operations to quite large wineries and also on bottling lines.

One aspect that excited us about Richard was his proven ability to work with vignerons to ensure that quality begins and occurs in the vineyard. He has a passion that matches the ideology of Elderton, in that he truly wants to make absolutely world-class wines which show a stamp of regionality with a touch of personality. Richard names his favourite varietals as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling, which hold him in good stead at Elderton.

Richard will take control of the day-to-day operational winemaking duties at Elderton, and will be joined by our Consultant Winemaker James Irvine, Lorraine, Cameron and Allister Ashmead on the blending and styling bench. We look forward to seeing his ‘mark’ on the future releases from Elderton.
