High Country Chardonnay 2002 vintage has been named the Best Bargain
White in the 2003/2004 Penguin Good Australia Wine Guide. In its
fourteenth year of publication, the Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide is
not only Australia's best-known wine guide, but the most up-to-date and
the best value for money. Over 1000 wines are tasted each year for the
guide by leading Australian wine experts Huon Hooke and Ralph
Kyte-Powell.
The High Country Chardonnay has a strong award history with a total of 67 medals won at national wine shows since its launch in 1995 including 1 trophy, 9 Gold and 13 Silvers. The 2002 vintage is no exception and with its new vibrant packaging, provides a smart and elegant offering for around $12 per bottle. The High Country Chardonnay 2002 uses only free-run juice, which is then partially fermented in French and American oak barriques and left on lees for 6 months. This results in a soft, elegant Chardonnay full of peach and citrus fruit flavours that is the perfect accompaniment to poultry dishes and light Italian cuisine, especially pasta. The High Country Vineyard is situated in the King Valley, North East Victoria. The substantial vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Shiraz along with some experimental varieties. Fruit is sourced from premium cooler climate vineyards from North East Victoria, predominantly the King and Alpine Valleys. It is here where some of the vineyards climb 600 metres above sea level. This high altitude results in a long, cool ripening period, which in turn produces elegant and concentrated flavours in the wines.
