The 2003 Melbourne Wine Show saw Casella Estate Wines raise many a glass in celebration of their success. The 2003 Yendah Vale Viognier, to the surprise of many a competitor, took out the Kubota Tractors Trophy for “Best Dry White from Current Vintage” and a gold medal in class 16. Not stopping there, Casella’s 2002 Yendah Vale Viognier took home a silver medal in class 28. Casella Estate Wines also secured a further 11 Bronze Medals for a variety of other wines, making a strong statement for the Riverina Region.

The 2003 Yendah Vale Viognier trophy was a standout, and was one of this year’s most impressive wins, due to the varietals youth in the Australian viticultural scene. Historically, Chardonnay, and other popular varietals have taken home the trophy. The consumer popularity of the wine is however on the rise in Australia and the USA. Viognier is made in a range of styles, from unwooded to wooded and sweet. Chief Winemaker Alan Kennett and his team created a full bodied wine with apricot and citrus aromas and hints of cinnamon. It is beautifully textured with clean acid freshness, typical of the variety and ideal for the Australian palate.

Currently on the bottle shop shelves is the 2002 Yendah Vale Viognier (pictured), with the 2003 yet to be bottled. Made to drink whilst young and fresh, Viognier is a wonderful wine to take from the fridge to the table and is best when complimenting spicy Asian food.

The Yendah Vale range was developed in 2002 to showcase fruit driven wines from the premium growing areas across South Eastern Australia. The range consists of Viognier, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Durif and Petit Verdot.

The Yendah Vale Viognier originates in the Riverina Region, traditionally known as the fruit bowl of New South Wales, producing almost two thirds of the New South Wales wine grape crush and on average, about 15% of the national total. This is an area that produces consistent grape yields, but until now has not been widely recognised as an area for the production of premium wines. Casella Wines are on their way to changing this perception, with their consistent trophy and medal winning wines.
