On Saturday August 23rd Brown Brothers Milawa Vineyard won the National Award for Family Business in the ‘Fourth Generation and Beyond’ category at the Family Business of Australia 5th Annual National Conference in Hobart.

This competition is run annually by Family Business Australia, a not-for-profit business organisation dedicated to providing advice and services to family owned businesses, which form by far the largest sector in the Australian economy - it is estimated that over 80% of all Australian businesses are family owned.

The Australian Family Business of the Year Awards celebrates the achievements of Australian family businesses, and their contribution to our life, economy and culture. The awards are open to both public & private Australian businesses, which are substantially owned and operated by a family or group of families.

The Brown family naturally had a healthy representation at the awards from their 4th generation: John Andrew & wife Anneshka Brown, Angela Brown and Cynthia Brown.

Cynthia, Brown Brothers’ Employment Services Manager, said “This is great milestone for Brown Brothers both as a family and as a company. We have always been family owned and hope that we always will be – this award is a much appreciated testament to our way of doing business.”

This continues to be an exciting year for Brown Brothers: on top of growing UK and USA exports, they also launched their flagship Patricia range of wines in March. In keeping with their strong sense of family, the range is named after Patricia Brown, matriarch of the clan and mother of current CEO Ross Brown, to honor her amazing contributions to the business and family over the last six decades.

Ross said ‘This recognition in the family arena means as much to us as any winemaking award – without all our family’s continued contributions there would be no wines!’
