Knappstein Lenswood Vineyards 2002 Pinot Noir has been named top Pinot Noir by the Wine Professionals judging panel at the 2003 Hyatt/Advertiser SA Wine of the Year Awards, announced on September 5.

This is the second year in a row that the Adelaide Hills label has won the Pinot Noir category and the sixth time in the past 11 years that a Lenswood Vineyards Pinot has been recognised at the awards.

Winemaker and co-owner Tim Knappstein said despite being grown during the coolest South Australian summer on record, the 2002 Pinot Noir had come up trumps.

“We were initially worried that the fruit wouldn’t ripen, however six weeks of sunny, but cool, weather in early 2002 saved the day, resulting in small bunches of grapes with exceptional colour,” Tim said.

“The late ripening 2002 vintage has produced an exceptionally rich and concentrated single vineyard wine, full of traditional Pinot Noir fruit characteristics, including dark cherry, plum and raspberry.

“The wine has some great toasty, smoky oak characteristics, and is developing touches of earth and leather. And the palate shows a real pinot ‘velvet’ mouthfeel, with layers of sweet, ripe supple fruit balanced by excellence acidity and full, ripe tannins.”

Lenswood Vineyards has developed a reputation for producing consistently high quality Pinot Noirs, and several vintages have won gold medals at the International Wine Challenge in London.

The 2002 Pinot Noir partners well with duck or venison, and would respond well to cellaring for five to ten years. It has a recommended retail price of $45.

Knappstein Lenswood Vineyards is a premium Adelaide Hills wine label owned by Tim and Annie Knappstein. Well-known as the former owners of Tim Knappstein Wines in Clare, Tim and Annie sold their Clare Valley interests in 1995 to concentrate on Knappstein Lenswood Vineyards. They have had no association with Tim Knappstein Wines since then.
