Pol Roger, a Champenois from Ay, founded his champagne house in Epernay in 1849. For the next fifty years, until his death in 1899, he built his business into one of the most respected in Champagne – a legacy that has been honourably maintained by his successors.

The company is one of the few remaining family-owned Champagne producers and continues to be run by the direct descendants of the founder, in an unbroken family succession that includes Christian Pol Roger.

Christian grew up in Epernay and began working with the family firm in 1966, after studying at the University of Lille and completing military service in Germany . Now, with his cousin Christian de Billy, also a descendant of the founder, Christian directs the operation of 200 acres of vineyards and 7 kilometres of cellars that produce some 1.3 million bottles of grande marque Champagne each year.

The unique qualities of the House of Pol Roger have won many admirers. Chief among them was Sir Winston Churchill, a lifelong devotee, who is once said to have remarked, “My tastes are simple: I am easily satisfied with the best”.

The qualities that appealed to Sir Winston are no less evident today and throughout the course of its 150-year history, Pol Roger has become the Champagne of royalty, heads of state, politicians and dedicated connoisseurs.
