Are you ready Australia?

24/07/2010

New Zealand has been beating Australia at the wine game for some time now with white wine imports much to the dismay of Australian producers.  Now wine lovers in Sydney and Melbourne will have the opportunity to sample the Hawke’s Bay red wines that are outperforming Shiraz, Merlot and Bordeaux blends on a regular basis at the annual Tri-Nations Wine Challenge.

Articles published this year in The Sydney Morning Herald by Huon Hooke and in Gourmet Traveller WINE by Andrew Caillard support this awakening to Hawke’s Bay’s fantastic red and white wines.  Often cited as elegant, rich, fruit forward and with some complexity, Hawke’s Bay wines are said to blend the best of the old and new worlds of wine.

Part of the annual wine calendar in New Zealand, “Hot Red Hawke’s Bay” has been specially developed to bring Hawke’s Bay’s wine to export markets.  Winemakers will be there in person to talk through the wines and provide a real understanding of Hawke’s Bay’s regional strengths and what Australia has to look forward to as well as look out for!

Twenty-four Hawke’s Bay wineries will be visiting Melbourne and Sydney next week at almost sold-out events.  As New Zealand’s oldest and second largest wine region in the country, Hawke’s Bay is renowned as New Zealand’s red wine capital. Over 130 wines will be available for tasting on the day with a range representative of the Hawke’s Bay annual vintage.

General admission tickets are available on www.ticketmaster.com.au . This includes free tasting of all wines and a full catalogue of all wines and wineries. Trade can register directly online at www.winehawkesbay.co.nz .  A Syrah Masterclass (Shiraz, for those on the Australian side of the Tasman) is also being held by www.nzwineonline.com.au in support of the event in Sydney.
