Sparkling Hat-Trick for Ed Carr

10/08/2003
Friday 8th August 2003

Ed Carr and the sparkling wine team have scored a hat-trick - winning trophies for both the Best Sparkling Red and Best Sparkling Wine of Show for the third successive year.

The Best Sparkling Wine Of Show Trophy awarded to the 2001 Arras Chardonnay Pinot Noir signalled the company's sixth consecutive trophy for "Best Sparkling Wine of Show".

The group's performance was backed up when the judge's results revealed that every Gold medal awarded across all sparkling classes originated from the Hardy portfolio.

At last night's 2003 Melbourne Wine Show, a total of four trophies were awarded to the Hardy Wine Company.

- 2001 Arras Chardonnay, Pinot Noir
Amorin Cork Trophy - for Best Sparkling Wine of Show

- 1998 Leasingham Classic Clare Sparkling Shiraz
Trophy for Best Sparkling Red of Show

- 1999 Yarra Burn "Bastard Hill" Chardonnay
Trophy for Best Chardonnay in Class 25

- Most Successful Exhibitor - Brandy section (shared with McWilliams)
"HR Haselgrove Memorial Trophy" - Most Successful Exhibitor - BrandyThe Melbourne Wine Show is the most prestigious wine show on the national circuit and attracts over 4300 entries across 63 classes.

Group Sparkling Winemaker Ed Carr was elated at the team's latest haul.

"For Arras, this recognition highlights the strength of Tasmania as arguably Australia's finest vineyard source for sparkling base."

"For sparkling red, the Clare Valley is one of Australia's standout regions. Shiraz from this region shows elegance and subtlety, and the Leasingham team are crafting excellent wines with suppleness and fine tannin structures to age remarkably well."

Yarra Burn completed the trophy haul, winning the trophy for Best Chardonnay in Class 25. Winemaker Manager Steve Flamsteed said: "This wine truly reflects the pedigree of the Hoddles Creek vineyard. As a four year-old Chardonnay, it still brims with vibrancy, elegance and balance - hallmarks of great Chardonnay, and testament to quality and consistency of this single vineyard site."

In total, the Hardy Wine Company was awarded 20 Gold, 32 Silver and 179 Bronze medals.
